When a bar fight spills out into the street, the two combatants end up in a wagon carrying grapevines carefully transported from Italy.  The vines are ruined.  The men are fined but nothing can make up for losing the irreplaceable vines.  The vintner's son Tonio opens fire with a carbine on one of the men and is killed by the other in self-defense.  The brawling men had meant no harm and the damage they have done to Mr. Lazarino weighs heavily on the conscience of at least one of them.
